We trusted Jesus in 1992, when both of us were 30 years old and Jim was in the Navy. We had no experience with missions. Our second church was very missions-minded, and we wanted to be a part of that effort. However, we had no specific calling or burden, so we were advised to wait and pray for God’s call. Jim participated in two short-term teaching missions trips to Kenya and was delighted to realize that he loved the Kenyan people. We continued to pray for God’s call, and in 2012, God gave us a clear invitation. In 2013, Jim retired from the Navy and we moved to Chogoria.

We were invited to serve at Chogoria Hospital to help start a Christian Family Medicine Residency training program, discipling and training young East Africans to become missionary doctors. When we arrived in Chogoria, we were the only Westerners at the hospital. The residency is now well underway, and Chogoria is training and discipling excellent young physicians from several East African nations. When these doctors finish training, they will take excellent medicine and the gospel back to their homes.

Martha is active in community ministry. She partners with a wise, godly, Kenyan lady in reaching out to the most needy with compassion and thoughtful development. Martha led an effort to bring the Samaritan Strategy to 50 local church leaders and continues to build momentum in transforming the society with a biblical worldview. With the unofficial title of “Mama Watoto Wengi” or “Mother of Many Children,” she serves through meaningful hospitality.
