Hungary: Coffee House Ministry

Recently, WGM’s presence has extended to a village of around 6,500 people an hour outside of Budapest. The dream is to eventually plant a church in this community, but trust must be established and value added. It seems that a coffee house could fill a void in what the community has to offer and provide an excellent opportunity to build relationships within the community. It would also provide a much more natural place to hold outreaches for the community. As is the case in much of Hungary, the population of this town has a very low percentage of believing Christians and there is not an evangelical church presence in the community.

Length of Service
  • Mid-term: one year or longer
  • Long-term: two or more years
Special Requirements

If coming to serve as a barista, must have some experience in making both espresso-based drinks and filtered coffee.

Ministry Description
  • Mid-term and long-term volunteers could serve in a number of roles.
  • As the coffee house is still in the dreaming stage, anyone with experience in running or working in a coffee house could help develop the business plan and design the coffee house.
  • Graphic design expertise could be used in branding the coffee house.
  • Once the coffee house is open, there would be opportunities to come and serve as a barista who would engage as language allows with the customers in a manner that would share the love of Jesus.
  • The dream is to offer English classes, baby-mom groups, and youth events out of the coffee shop. There would be expectations of helping with such events.
Training Provided
  • Those coming to serve as baristas would be trained in the work flow of the coffee house.
  • Hungarian language learning will be expected.
Quick Facts
  • In the early 1900s, coffee houses served as the meeting and work places of famous authors, poets, and writers in Budapest. Some even had their mail delivered to their coffee shop of choice.
  • Hungary’s population is nearly 90% cultural Christian, but this is by and large tied to tradition and not belief. As such, evangelicals are listed at under 3% of the population.
