Papua New Guinea: Church Planting Intern

Help plant churches in and around Mount Hagen, Papua New Guinea, under the oversight of WGM staff and a seasoned national pastor!

Who: 2 male college-age interns

When: 8 weeks, summer 2023

Where: Mount Hagen, Papua New Guinea

Ministry Focus

Church Planting and Church Ministry

The ideal candidate has a heart for ministry and believes that the local church is the hope of the world. This person must be able and willing to prepare and lead Bible studies, give a testimony, pray aloud with others, and speak in public. A desire for adventure and a willingness to forego some of the comforts of life are also essential for living and working in PNG. Some of the work involved is physical; therefore, the candidate should be in reasonably good general health, free of disabilities, and able to walk several miles over uneven terrain.
Other skills that could be useful include construction, mechanical aptitude, and musical ability. However, these are not required.

Christian Union Bible College, Mount Hagen, Papua New Guinea

Training Provided

Prior to arrival, WGM staff will work with the interns to tailor this experience as much as possible to the unique passions, talents, and gifts they bring to the table.
Once here, the interns will work under the direction and supervision of WGM staff and Pastor Ohio Kauga, a local pastor with a passion for church planting in this region. They will also be part of a weekly Bible study with Pastor Ohio and CUBC students planning to plant churches upon graduation.

Language Requirements

After arrival, interns will be expected to learn some of the local language, Tok Pisin, with the aid of a local language helper. Eighty percent of this language is derived from English words, so it is generally very easy for English speakers to quickly learn at least enough for basic communication. However, for their lessons and teaching, interns may use English with the help of an interpreter.

Length of Service

Other: 8 weeks

Ministry Description

The majority of the time will be spent in Mount Hagen, the third largest city in Papua New Guinea. Mount Hagen is a focal hub for residents of seven nearby provinces (Western Highlands, Eastern Highlands, Southern Highlands, Jiwaka, Enga, Simbu, and Hela) for business and commercial activity. As a result, the city is an interesting mix of different people and cultures on any given day.

As an intern, you will be sharing a small apartment with one other intern of the same gender in the married student apartment building on the campus of Christian Union Bible College (CUBC). The apartment has two bedrooms and a shared living area. Toilet and shower facilities are in a separate building nearby. You will be expected to help the students with garden work in the mornings and occasional meal preparation. Some meals you will take with the missionary families living nearby, but most often you will eat with the Bible college students.

You will be working closely with Pastor Ohio Kauga, a local pastor with a passion for church planting in this area. Depending on the needs at the time of your arrival, you may be involved in any of the following:

  • Clearing and leveling ground in preparation for a church building or parsonage
  • Erecting a temporary or permanent church building structure
  • Holding evangelistic services
  • Canvassing the local community on foot and inviting people to outreach events, Bible studies, or worship
  • Holding Bible studies for pre-Christians and/or new believers
  • Praying with people
  • Holding worship services

Prior to your arrival, we will communicate with you about what specific ministry options will be available during the time of your internship. You will be expected to prepare at least some lessons in advance of your arrival. If you have any musical ability, there will certainly be opportunities to help lead worship or provide special music.
In addition, you will meet weekly for Bible study with Pastor Ohio and Bible college students who are preparing to become church planters after graduation from CUBC.
While the majority of your time will be spent in Mount Hagen and the surrounding area, you will have the opportunity to visit at least one other province that is more rural. You will spend up to five days there, learning about the lives of rural PNG people and ministering alongside our teammates, the Porter family. Ministry during this time could include children’s ministry, men’s Bible study/mentoring, visiting area churches, and more.
While these are the main ministry focuses of the internship position, it may be possible—with advance communication and preparation—to provide exposure to other areas of interest.
