Don Moon

Retired Missionary to Argentina
Send a Note
"To live a life that is pleasing to God"
By Kateland Vernon, Staff Writer, July 2024

Raised on a farm in southwest Iowa, Don gave his heart and life to God at the age of seven at a youth camp. At 16, he felt God calling him to serve overseas as a missionary and joined WGM to answer this call in 1984. “The goal of my personal life,” Don wrote in his missionary application, “is to live a life that is pleasing to God.” And that’s what he sought to do with his wife, Glenda, throughout his 40 years as a missionary.

In 1979, while attending Vennard College, Don and Glenda were married. They both graduated in 1980 with a BA in Bible, Don with a minor in missions and Glenda with a minor in general education. They were appointed to Argentina in 1984, after applying to WGM as missionaries.

For 27 years, Don and Glenda served faithfully in Argentina. They returned to the U.S. in 2003 to serve at WGM headquarters, and then God called them back to Argentina in 2009 to train other missionaries. When Glenda passed in April 2022, Don continued serving in leadership with WGM. Don loved seeing people discipled and maturing in their faith, then becoming spiritual leaders who mentored others, and it was while helping others grow that he learned the importance of understanding your spiritual gifts and abilities while seeking counsel and help for both strengths and weaknesses. God continued to prove Himself a faithful source of peace and counsel throughout the Moons’ missions work.

If Don could go back and tell himself anything when he was just starting his missions journey, it would be to “innovate well and in collaboration with others” and to “look beyond your own organization for ministry opportunities, creative ideas, counsel and education.”

It's this spirit of innovation that sums up Don’s missions work. During their years of service, the Moons expanded the ministries in Argentina, further developed field leadership training, and helped set up a system for mentoring between veteran and newly appointed missionaries. They were always looking for ways to innovate. And it looks like that’s not going to stop for Don anytime soon.

Don retired from WGM in June 2024, but he has ambitious plans for his retirement. One of these plans is riding his bicycle across the U.S. He is also looking forward to spending time with his grandchildren and focusing on specific ministry projects, including Business As Mission through Lunar Consulting and Design, LLC. He continues to cling to the promise of Psalm 46:1, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (NIV).
