Shelly McCollum

Shelly McCollum’s journey with World Gospel Mission is a testament to the power of faith, resilience, and a commitment to serve. As she steps into retirement, we reflect on a remarkable career that spanned over 28 years, filled with dedication, growth, and a deep love for both her work and the people she served alongside.
Shelly’s story begins in a small town where her childhood summers were spent attending Sunday School and youth group. Initially, these gatherings were simply a way to pass the time, but in 4th grade, everything changed when she accepted Christ into her life at a Pioneer Girls Club meeting. This decision marked the beginning of a lifelong journey of faith that would eventually lead her to WGM.
After her children, Todd and Katelin, were born, Shelly made the decision to leave her job as a corporate tax auditor to focus on her family. Her husband, Kirk, a police officer with unpredictable shifts, supported her in this decision. Shelly started a small accounting business from home, but her desire to serve her community led her into local politics, where she served on the city council.
It was during this time that she met Dr. Doug Carter, then VP of Advancement at WGM. Recognizing her talents, he persuaded her to assist the WGM finance team with an accounting software conversion in what was meant to be a temporary position. However, that temporary role evolved into a part-time position, and eventually, Shelly found herself in a full-time role as part of the finance team. When a leadership transition occurred at WGM, Shelly stepped into the role of Vice President of Financial Services, a position she would hold for many years.
Shelly’s tenure at WGM was marked by numerous challenges and transitions, each of which helped shape her into the leader she became. Reflecting on these experiences, Shelly acknowledges the importance of balancing her responsibilities as a leader with her commitment to loving and supporting those around her. She learned that it is impossible to please everyone, and instead, she focused on pleasing God in all that she did. This mindset not only guided her decisions but also provided her with the strength and clarity needed to lead during difficult times.
While Shelly’s career at WGM was filled with challenges, it was also filled with moments of joy and camaraderie. She fondly recalls the late nights spent with her team, working tirelessly to balance the books and close the fiscal year. Despite the stress, these moments were often punctuated with laughter and a sense of shared purpose. Shelly treasures the strong bonds she formed with her colleagues, bonds that were often strengthened by the team’s commitment to prayer and mutual support during times of personal crisis.
One of the most rewarding aspects of Shelly’s time at WGM was the opportunity to see the impact of her work on a global scale. Through her efforts, WGM was able to send more missionaries around the world, spreading the Gospel and making a difference in countless lives. Shelly’s contributions, though often behind the scenes, were vital to the success of the organization’s mission.
Throughout her years of service, Shelly learned invaluable lessons about faith, leadership, and perseverance. She often reflects on Esther 4:14, a verse that has been particularly significant to her: “And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” This scripture has served as a reminder that even when faced with situations outside of her comfort zone, Shelly was exactly where she needed to be.
As she looks back on her career, Shelly offers advice to her younger self with a touch of humor: “Run. Just kidding.” This lighthearted response encapsulates her ability to find humor in even the most challenging circumstances, a trait that undoubtedly contributed to her success.
As Shelly steps into retirement, she is far from slowing down. With plans to crochet more, grow her tax business, continue her involvement with the Ducktail Run Rod & Custom Show, and spend as much time as possible with her four grandsons, Shelly’s days will be full. She also looks forward to spending time in Florida, where she can lounge by the pool, fish, and collect shells.
Shelly’s legacy at WGM is one of steadfast faith, unwavering commitment, and a deep love for the people she served. Her story serves as an inspiration to all who have had the privilege of working with her, and her impact will be felt for years to come. As she transitions into this new chapter of life, we celebrate her many accomplishments and the indelible mark she has left on World Gospel Mission.
