Nick and Jessica Laster

Harambee is Swahili for “we all pull together.” The Bible tells us we are each given a spiritual gift that should be used to help others. God has blessed us with a servant’s heart and a gift for teaching, and we desire to use these talents to bless others and expand the kingdom.
Jessica: I don’t remember a time in my life where I didn’t believe Jesus to be my Lord and Savior, but it wasn’t until I was 13 when I made a public profession of faith. I also cannot remember a time in my life when I did not know I was going to pursue a career in education. I served in the public school system for eight years and desire to take my gift of teaching to the mission field as a missionary kid teacher.
When I learned that one of the top five reasons missionaries do not respond to God’s call to the mission field is due to the educational needs of their children, I knew I could help. I believe God gives us each a gift so we can support one another. I hope that by serving at Tenwek Hospital in Kenya, I can truly put into action Harambee, helping to keep missionary physicians on the field, treating patients and sharing the Gospel.
Nick: I grew up in church, but did not officially accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior until my senior year of high school. I have spent my adult life pursuing the Lord and growing in my faith, and I truly believe God has given me the gift of having a servant’s heart. I am always looking for ways to meet the needs of others, so I was excited when God called our family to global mission work. I was presented with an opportunity to serve as a chaplain at Tenwek where I will disciple other chaplains, pray with patients, and share the hope of Jesus with people in their greatest times of need, exemplifying the meaning of Harambee.
