Jim and Martha Ritchie

Jim and Martha Ritchie’s story began with a period of waiting and preparation, as they sought clarity from God about their call to missions. For over a decade, they prayed, grew in faith, and gained valuable life experiences. Jim’s career as a Navy ER physician and medical educator, combined with his involvement in the Christian Medical and Dental Association, paved the way for their eventual mission to Africa. A pivotal moment came when Jim was invited to teach Advanced Cardiac Life Support courses in Kenya. His deep connection with the eager medical students there planted the seeds for their journey to Chogoria, where they would dedicate their lives to equipping local medical practitioners and building vibrant community life.
Jim and Martha’s faith was tested during Jim’s deployments to Afghanistan, which required Martha to trust God deeply for her husband’s safety and their family’s future. These experiences fortified their reliance on God, teaching them that He is trustworthy in all circumstances.
Their transition to the mission field was further tested. Moving to Kenya with their three youngest children while leaving their three older children in the U.S. required immense faith. Martha, who had homeschooled her children, found herself navigating the grief and adjustments of her family while adapting to a new culture. Over time, their children thrived, even embracing unexpected changes like boarding school, a step that reshaped Martha’s understanding of her role. Through it all, God’s faithfulness became a cornerstone of their ministry, as He provided encouragement, softened hearts, and guided them in miraculous ways.
The Ritchies’ ministry in Kenya was characterized by a “ministry of presence,” as they devoted themselves to community building, hospitality, and encouraging others. Jim’s medical expertise played a pivotal role in establishing a Family Medicine Residency program at Chogoria Hospital, a project that has had a lasting impact on the region. Together, Jim and Martha fostered relationships across cultural and professional boundaries, serving everyone from hospital CEOs to laundry staff with equal care and respect.
Martha’s initiatives were as diverse as they were meaningful. She hosted tea and Bible studies for hospital staff, started a Kiswahili language school, created a play area for pediatric patients, and coordinated the Samaritan Strategy training for local church leaders. Her “Wednesdays with Aunt Martha” became a cherished time for missionary and compound children, offering them a sense of home and belonging. These seemingly simple acts of service were foundational to the flourishing of the Chogoria community.
The Ritchies’ work extended beyond Kenya. They played a vital role in Member Care, supporting fellow missionaries through prayer, encouragement, and practical assistance. Martha’s leadership as WGM’s Field Director for Member Care exemplified her heart for serving others. Together, the Ritchies’ ministry created a ripple effect of hope and transformation, impacting lives both directly and indirectly.
Throughout their journey, Jim and Martha learned to trust in God’s sovereignty and creativity. They saw firsthand that God is always at work, whether in the healing of patients, the transformation of communities, or the provision of resources for the hospital. They embraced the diversity of thought and practice among their colleagues, recognizing that the beauty of missions lies in the unity of purpose and the richness of cultural exchange.
One of their most profound realizations was that missions is as much about personal growth as it is about service. For the Ritchies, God used their time in Africa to deepen their spiritual walk and reveal His extravagant grace. They were continually reminded of His faithfulness, from keeping their family safe and healthy to growing Chogoria Hospital into a beacon of compassionate care in the region.
As they enter retirement, Jim and Martha remain committed to serving others. Martha plans to continue in her role with WGM’s Emeritus program, supporting retirees and alumni while also working part-time with Samaritan’s Purse in Member Care. She is pursuing training in Spiritual Direction, a testament to her ongoing desire to minister to others. Jim will continue to share his expertise globally, equipping medical missionaries through speaking engagements, retreats, and training programs.
Together, they will support Afghan refugees in their community and cherish their family—a source of joy and inspiration throughout their lives. The Ritchies’ retirement is not a conclusion, but the beginning of a new chapter filled with opportunities to serve, grow, and glorify God.
