A drawing of a large four story building

Join us in funding the reconstruction and furnishing of the Sue Steury Building at Tenwek Hospital. This essential building was severely damaged by fire on February 9, 2018. Because of this fire, the upper level of the two-story building was destroyed. The building had provided critical hospital services, including a wound ward, sterilization, cancer registry, social services, hospital statistics, laundry, tailoring, kitchen, and restaurant. The loss of this building was a major setback for Tenwek Hospital. Because of the loss of this building, Tenwek Hospital has struggled to find places to temporarily house these functions. Through God’s grace we were able to find temporary locations, but this has caused an increase in inefficiency in several of our service lines.

The nearly finished Sue Steury Building with walls, windows, and roof in place

Through God’s provision, Tenwek Hospital has been provided with enough money to design and begin the construction of a new building at the site of the Sue Steury Building, but we still need an additional $700,000 to finish. A good portion of these funds will not only replace what was already existing in the previous facility, but also will allow for expanded services, including kidney dialysis, cancer chemotherapy, infectious disease and COVID-19 care, telemetry monitoring, and wound ward, among other services. The kitchen which prepares patient meals is also being reconstructed. Most of the building's exterior is now completed, and the project is scheduled for completion in early 2022. We praise God for major donations received thus far for fire recovery and reconstruction. Substantial financial support totaling $700,000, however, is still required for completion of the final finish work and to purchase needed new furnishings.

Plaque: This building is dedicated in honour of 'Tapkigen' Mrs. J. Sue Steury for her faithful and exemplary service to God and the people of Kenya at Tenwek Hospital from 1959 to 1994. She was a teacher in word and deed

The building was dedicated to Sue Steury on October 18, 1997, as noted on a plaque which survived the fire in 2018. Sue Steury was one of the first long-term missionaries at Tenwek hospital, and her impact on community health and development, especially with women in the community, is still felt today. Her husband, Dr. Ernie Steury, was the first long-term physician at Tenwek. After Sue Steury's passing on September 28, 2021, at the age of 89 years, memorial services have honored her life and her legacy at Tenwek Hospital. Completion of this building will provide a further opportunity for her legacy to continue through the enhanced care for patients at Tenwek Hospital to the glory of God!

Thank you for your generous partnership in support of the Sue Steury Building renovation and reconstruction at Tenwek Hospital.
