There's something exciting about saying yes to an opportunity God places in front of you.
Whether you're preparing for a short-term trip or a longer season of ministry, it's natural to wonder what lies ahead. No amount of preparation can remove every unknown. Ministry opportunities have a way of stretching us beyond what we expect, and God often works in ways we never would have anticipated.
Yet taking time to prepare can help you approach the experience with humility and a willingness to let God lead.
Here are six things worth keeping in mind as you get ready to serve.
- Respond to God's Calling
When responding to God's calling, it's natural to bring ideas and expectations about how you hope to serve. But part of faithful obedience is surrendering those desires to the real ministry needs on the field. The gap between the ideal and the reality is often where missionary life becomes most clear, and where unexpected blessings can take root. Entrust the experience to God and wait on Him.
- Overcome Your Fears
Overcoming your fears begins when you are willing to step beyond what feels familiar. Short- and mid-term ministry opportunities will likely include unknowns, but those moments can become opportunities to grow in faith, depend on the Lord, and discover that He is present even outside your comfort zone.
- Expect to Discover New Gifts and Abilities
Expecting to discover new gifts and abilities means holding your plans with open hands. God does not necessarily call the qualified, but He qualifies those He calls. Your experience is not ultimately about what you can accomplish on your own, but about what God may choose to do through you.
- Prepare, but Stay Flexible
Preparing while staying flexible will help you enter the experience with both readiness and humility. The only thing you can be certain of is that things will not go exactly as you expect. Culture, language, climate, schedules, and team dynamics may all require adjustment, so flexibility becomes part of how you serve well.
- Attitude Is Everything
Choosing the right attitude matters because you represent your country, your home, your university, and above all, your Lord. You are entering a spiritual battlefield, and your posture can shape the way you serve and relate to others. Take every opportunity to encourage, appreciate, and express gratitude to your team and the missionaries serving on the field.
- Expect God to Work
Expecting God to work keeps your focus on His invitation rather than your own effort. God invites you to minister alongside Him, and that means entering the experience with prayer, openness, and anticipation. Be prepared to witness God doing great things in the lives of others and in your own heart as well.
No ministry opportunity unfolds exactly the way we expect.
As you prepare, trust God with the unknowns and remain open to His leading. He is already at work, and part of the adventure is discovering where He invites you to join Him.
