Tenwek Hospital College of Health Sciences: Nursing Program

At any given time, 130-150 students (approximately 1/3 male and 2/3 female) from all over Kenya are attending the school, which is a government-recognized institution. Students are required to meet government qualifications before being accepted into the three-and-a-half-year program, which trains them in the areas of general nursing, midwifery, and community nursing. The students are also given access to a fully-equipped practice lab to demonstrate and improve their skills.

In addition to their nursing studies, the students participate in small discipleship groups to help them grow in their walks with the Lord. Each year, the school holds a Spiritual Emphasis Week that provides a time of focused attention to hearing the Word of God. Through this emphasis on spiritual development, Tenwek Hospital College of Health Sciences graduates are able to spiritually care for patients and help them come to know Christ in a personal way.

Since 1987, more than 350 students have graduated from Tenwek Hospital College of Health Sciences. Graduates are often hired at Tenwek Hospital or one of its offsite dispensaries as administrators, teachers, or nurses. Other graduates work in healthcare facilities throughout Kenya, including the Africa Gospel Church Baby Centre and Walter Reed Research in Kenya. They also serve with Red Cross International (Beirut, Lebanon) and as nursing staff in remote mission areas in Kenya. The graduates are in high demand because they are known for their excellent nursing skills and strong work ethic.
