Uganda: The Dignity Project

Start a Campaign

The teenage girls who attended former missionary Jade Metz's church in Uganda were getting ready to go back to boarding school after a break. Jade wanted to put together some care packages for them and asked the girls what kinds of school supplies would be helpful.

“I thought they would want notebooks, bedding, or backpacks,” Jade later shared. “I was wrong. They wanted sanitary pads!”

Jade began to realize the struggles that many Ugandan girls and women face during monthly menstruation. For many, disposable sanitary products are simply not affordable. Women are forced to use ineffective and often harmful alternatives. Young ladies frequently miss school and humiliation burdens them every month. They shoulder fear, worry, shame, and some are even outcast.

In August 2015, The Dignity Project was birthed. The Dignity Project is providing hope in the face of this basic need! Jade Metz worked together with Ugandan seamstresses to design washable sanitary pads made from materials readily available in Uganda.

Impact

The Dignity Project works directly with Ugandan seamstresses to ensure high-quality craftsmanship and valuable employment. The washable sanitary pads are designed to last at least two years! The Dignity Project has distributed pads, Bibles and Bible study materials to women in schools, orphanages, prisons, psychiatric institutions, and hospitals throughout Uganda. Every time a pad is given, the Gospel message of Jesus Christ is shared, as well. In 2021 alone, 2,508 women were touched by The Dignity Project.

The Dignity Project has also written a book called Women of Dignity. Four African women worked together to author every page. Women of Dignity is a book for African women written by African women about Tamar, Ruth, Rahab, Mary, Gomer, and Esther. God is on the move in Uganda through The Dignity Project.
