Kenya: Cardiologist (Tenwek)

Opportunities

Tenwek Hospital has a great need for both adult and pediatric cardiologists. There is a high rate of rheumatic heart disease (RHD) remaining in the local community and throughout rural Kenya. Therefore, there is a great need for screening, training, and the developing of strategies to improve statistics for this preventable disease. Tenwek also has a very active cardiovascular surgery schedule for both acquired and congenital heart disease. There is great need for screening and triaging preoperatively and for appropriate post-operative follow-up. At this time, the hospital staff is mainly doing echocardiograms and ultrasounds, but visiting physicians are using Tenwek to do more interventions such as devices, pacemakers, and balloon valvuloplasties. These services would be a great asset to the local community and beyond if they were being done more regularly.

Length of Service
  • Mid-term: four weeks to one year
  • Long-term: two or more years
