Texas/Mexico Border Ministries: Sports Ministry Personnel
Join the team at the Taylor Community Center in McAllen, Texas, in using sports to reach out to children and families.
Opportunities
- Do you love Jesus, children, and soccer? Taylor Community Center (TCC) offers quality training through the Soccer Lions Academy to children between the ages of four and eighteen. Soccer coaches and assistants who have a heart for ministry and discipleship can make a tremendous impact.
- Youth and adults gather to play soccer on our field. Soccer brings opportunities for competition, relationship building, and sharing the Gospel.
- Youth and adult basketball and volleyball teams use the TCC gym weekly. There is great interest in both basketball and volleyball training in the Rio Grande Valley.
- Basketball camps for kids are offered during the summer. Trainers are needed for one to two weeks.
- God can use sports connections to reach the lost. Is God calling you to join His work on the border?
Qualifications
Applicants should have experience playing and coaching the sports with which they hope to assist. They must have a clear understanding of all rules of play.
They must love Jesus and have a passion for relational evangelism and discipleship.
They must be willing to learn and adapt to the Texas/Mexico Border sports culture.
Language Requirements
- A knowledge of Spanish will be helpful for short-term volunteers, but it is not required.
- A knowledge of Spanish is required for long-term workers. Local and online language school options are available.
Training Provided
Applicants may be asked to complete pre-field training. Additional on-the-job training about the specifics of the TCC Soccer Lions Academy and basketball camps is provided.
Location
Length of Service
- Short-term: one to two weeks
- Mid-term: one to 12 months
- Long-term: two or more years
Ministry Description
Sports Ministry Personnel would assist with coaching responsibilities, leading practices, and sharing devotionals with kids and/or adults. There will be many opportunities to build relationships and teach biblical principles on the playing field and on the court! Ministry may involve planning sporting events for a variety of age groups and applicants should be willing to work with children, youth, and adults in a variety of settings. Relationship building is key to effective sports ministry on the Border.
- Housing will be provided as part of your support package.
- Groups of more than one will be considered.

- McAllen is in what is known as the Rio Grande Valley of south Texas. The population is a diverse mixture of immigrants and native Texans with a unique cultural heritage of both Spanish and English speakers.
