Burundi: Consultant OBGYN (Kibimba Hospital)

Opportunity

At Kibimba District Mission Hospital in rural Burundi, mothers often arrive in labor too late, too sick, or with complications that should never be fatal. The maternity unit is busy and growing, yet specialist obstetric care is limited. Preventable maternal and neonatal deaths remain a painful reality.

We are urgently seeking a Consultant OB/GYN to step into this gap—providing life-saving care, strengthening surgical and maternity services, and mentoring local staff. This role is both a frontline clinical position and a calling to serve where the need is greatest, reflecting Christ’s love to vulnerable mothers and families.

Responsibilities
  • Provide life-saving obstetric and gynecologic care in a high-need setting
  • Manage high-risk pregnancies and obstetric emergencies
  • Perform emergency and elective surgeries, including cesarean sections
  • Support and strengthen maternity systems (triage, labor monitoring, emergency response)
  • Mentor and train local healthcare workers to build long-term capacity
  • Contribute to a Christ-centered mission integrating physical and spiritual care
Qualifications
  • Consultant OB/GYN (board-certified or equivalent)
  • Experience managing obstetric emergencies in high-pressure settings
  • Competence in cesarean sections and gynecologic surgery
  • Willingness to work with limited resources and referral challenges
  • Heart for teaching and mentoring local healthcare workers
  • Strong Christian faith and commitment to mission service
  • Adaptability, humility, and ability to work in a team
Location

Kibimba, Gitega Province, Burundi

Length of Service
  • Short-term: 2–8 weeks
  • Mid-term: 1–12 months
  • Long-term: 2+ years
Ministry Description

Kibimba District Mission Hospital is a growing 250+ bed hospital in rural Burundi, serving a large population with limited access to specialized care. The maternity department is one of the busiest units, receiving both routine and high-risk pregnancies, many presenting late with life-threatening complications such as obstructed labor, postpartum hemorrhage, eclampsia, and uterine rupture.

Due to a shortage of specialist OB/GYNs, many cases are managed by general medical officers and midwives who need advanced surgical backup, mentorship, and support. Some patients are referred from surrounding health centers, while others cannot afford referral and depend entirely on Kibimba for care.

As a Consultant OB/GYN, your impact will extend beyond individual patients—helping shape systems, develop protocols, and build a foundation for sustainable maternal health services for years to come.

Quick Facts
  • Hospital capacity: ~250 beds (expanding toward 350–400)
  • Busy maternity unit with high delivery volume
  • Frequent obstetric emergencies (PPH, eclampsia, obstructed labor, ruptured uterus)
  • Limited specialist coverage with high need for OB/GYN leadership
  • Serves a large rural and underserved population
  • Faith-based mission hospital with integrated spiritual care
  • Opportunity to shape and grow maternal health services
  • Strong collaboration with medical officers, nurses, and trainees
  • Rural setting with a welcoming community
