Burundi: Sonographer (Kibimba Hospital)

Overview

At Kibimba District Mission Hospital in rural Burundi, many critical medical decisions are made with limited diagnostic tools. Patients often present with advanced disease, and access to imaging can be the difference between life and death. We are seeking a skilled Sonographer to help develop and strengthen ultrasound services across the hospital, directly improving patient outcomes through timely and accurate diagnosis.

Responsibilities
  • Provide ultrasound imaging to support maternity, emergency, internal medicine, and surgical departments
  • Perform obstetric scans, trauma assessments, and basic cardiac and abdominal evaluations
  • Support clinical decision-making through accurate diagnostic imaging
  • Train and mentor local healthcare staff in ultrasound use, including point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS)
  • Contribute to building sustainable diagnostic capacity within the hospital
Qualifications
  • Certified Sonographer or trained clinician with ultrasound skills
  • Experience in obstetric, abdominal, and basic emergency ultrasound (POCUS)
  • Ability to work effectively in resource-limited settings
  • Interest in teaching and mentoring healthcare workers
  • Strong Christian faith and commitment to mission service
  • Flexibility and cross-cultural adaptability

Ministry Description

Kibimba is a 250+ bed mission hospital serving a rural, underserved population in Burundi. Imaging capacity is currently limited, and many conditions go undiagnosed or are diagnosed too late. Ultrasound is one of the most urgently needed services, supporting maternal health, emergency care, internal medicine, and surgical decision-making.

A Sonographer serving at Kibimba will help improve diagnostic accuracy, reduce unnecessary referrals, and strengthen multiple departments simultaneously. This role also plays a key part in training local staff, ensuring long-term sustainability and contributing to the hospital’s vision for expanded and improved imaging services.
