Burundi: Family Medicine Physician (Kibimba Hospital)

Overview

Kibimba District Mission Hospital in rural Burundi is seeking a Family Medicine Physician to help build and transform comprehensive frontline care in a high-need setting. Patients often present late with advanced disease—including hypertension, diabetes, infections, trauma, and chronic illness—while access to follow-up and specialist care is limited.

This role places the Family Physician at the center of care delivery, mentoring, and system development. It is both a clinical and ministry opportunity to shape sustainable healthcare, train future providers, and reflect Christ’s love through holistic, compassionate care.

Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive care across outpatient, inpatient, and emergency settings
  • Manage a wide range of acute and chronic conditions in a resource-limited environment
  • Serve as a key coordinating clinician across hospital departments
  • Mentor and teach local medical staff and trainees
  • Help strengthen clinical systems to improve quality, continuity, and access to care
  • Support the hospital’s mission through Christ-centered, compassionate service

  • Trained Family Medicine Physician (or equivalent)
  • Experience in outpatient, inpatient, and emergency care
  • Ability to manage diverse conditions with limited resources
  • Passion for teaching, mentorship, and system development
  • Strong Christian faith and commitment to mission service
  • Flexibility and cross-cultural adaptability
Location

Kibimba, Gitega Province, Burundi

Length of Service
  • Mid-term: 1–12 months
  • Long-term: 2+ years
Ministry Description

Kibimba District Mission Hospital is a 250+ bed facility serving a large rural population with limited access to healthcare. Due to poverty, distance, and health system gaps, many patients present late with advanced disease.

Family Medicine is critically needed to:

  • Provide broad, continuous care across departments
  • Reduce unnecessary referrals and strengthen local capacity
  • Improve outpatient and inpatient systems
  • Bridge gaps between limited specialty services

With few specialists available, the Family Physician becomes the backbone of the hospital—supporting quality, coordination, and patient-centered care. This role offers a unique opportunity to influence the health system clinically, educationally, and spiritually as the hospital grows toward becoming a teaching and referral center.

Quick Facts
  • 250+ bed mission hospital (expanding)
  • High outpatient and inpatient volume
  • Late presentation of acute and chronic disease
  • Limited specialist access; high need for generalist leadership
  • Rural, underserved population
  • Christ-centered care integrated into daily practice
  • Strong opportunities for teaching, leadership, and system development
