Burundi: Consultant Pediatrician (Kibimba District Mission Hospital)
Overview
At Kibimba District Mission Hospital in rural Burundi, children arrive critically ill from conditions that are often treatable—severe pneumonia, malnutrition, sepsis, malaria, and neonatal complications. Many present late due to delays in seeking care or failed treatment at lower-level facilities, and some families cannot afford referral. The pediatric ward is consistently busy, and neonatal services are growing but remain limited.
We are urgently seeking a Consultant Pediatrician to provide expert care, reduce preventable child deaths, and strengthen pediatric and neonatal services through hands-on care, training, and system development. This role is both a clinical position and a calling to serve vulnerable children with compassion and excellence.
Responsibilities
- Provide expert clinical care for acute pediatric and neonatal conditions
- Manage severe and late-presenting illnesses, including malaria, pneumonia, sepsis, dehydration, and malnutrition
- Support and develop neonatal care services, including Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) and future NICU capacity
- Strengthen pediatric systems of care and clinical protocols
- Train and mentor clinicians and nurses to build sustainable local capacity
- Participate in a Christ-centered mission focused on holistic care
Qualifications
- Board-certified or equivalent Consultant Pediatrician
- Experience managing acute pediatric and neonatal conditions
- Competence in emergency pediatric care (sepsis, severe malaria, respiratory distress, malnutrition)
- Interest or experience in neonatal care (prematurity, birth asphyxia, infections)
- Willingness to work in resource-limited settings
- Passion for teaching and mentoring healthcare workers
- Strong Christian faith and commitment to mission service
- Adaptability and cross-cultural sensitivity
Location
Kibimba, Gitega Province, Burundi
Length of Service
- Mid-term: 1–12 months
- Long-term: 2+ years
Ministry Description
Kibimba District Mission Hospital is a 250+ bed hospital serving a large rural population in Burundi where access to specialized pediatric care is extremely limited. The pediatric department sees a high daily patient volume, including many children with advanced disease that is highly treatable but often becomes fatal due to delayed care.
Neonatal mortality is a major challenge, with limited resources for premature and critically ill newborns. Much of the current pediatric care is provided by general clinicians who need specialist support and mentorship.
As a Consultant Pediatrician, you will provide life-saving care while also helping to develop pediatric and neonatal services, strengthen systems of care, and equip local staff to improve outcomes long term. Your presence can directly reduce preventable child deaths and shape the future of pediatric care at Kibimba.
